When you hear that word, preconceived notions or personal experiences may come to mind for you. Your spirit may jump with excitement, you may be interested but slightly overwhelmed, or you may slouch back in your chair with a less-than-thrilled attitude. Whatever comes to mind when you hear “missions”, here at The Waters Church, we have the desire and “mission” to make Jesus famous and to see lives transformed. Our church’s mission statement is, “To save and disciple people in Jesus’ name through Biblical learning and personal accountability.” But this mission isn’t just for us within the family of The Waters Church and it isn’t just for Katy, TX. Jesus tells us to take the Gospel to the whole world and to make disciples of all nations.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
We believe that we are called to make Jesus famous worldwide – among the Jewish community, to our neighbor down the street, to fellow Houstonians, to communities across the United States, and to all people groups… to the ends of the earth. We are called to go GLOBAL.
And, as we go GLOBAL, our desire is to not only share the Gospel…
… but to share the incredible, radical love of Jesus. His compassion and comfort. That in Him, no matter what life may look like, one can find true, eternal, life-changing HOPE.
We desire to give and to serve with no strings attached. We know that we are blessed to be a blessing to others and to further the Kingdom. We seek opportunities to meet needs in all facets of life – physical, social, emotional… and spiritual. We know that when a practical need is met, doors are often opened into one’s life and heart.
We hope to plant seeds that will transform and bring healing to individuals, families, communities, and nations. We want to support and empower the local church in reaching their community for Christ.
We follow the example of Jesus as we do this.
“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
This calling… this “mission”… to go GLOBAL is not just for a few of us. It is for all of us. It is not just for a few people to “go on a trip somewhere” each year and then pat themselves on the back about it. It is our dream that being GLOBALLY-minded will be who we are as a Waters church family year-round. And we ALL play a part in this. We can all PRAY. We can all GIVE. And as God leads, many of us will GO.
We encourage you to have an open mind and heart, to read over the resources and opportunities provided, and then stop to ask God, “What part can I play? How can I PRAY, GIVE and possibly GO GLOBAL in 2015?” And then boldly, with obedience and utter dependence on God, step forward in what He leads you to do. Don’t act out of guilt… God doesn’t “need you”… but He gives you the amazing privilege to be on the front lines of building His Kingdom on this earth. And don’t settle for merely what you think is possible or comfortable. God doesn’t always call the equipped… but He will equip the called.
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.” (Colossians 4:2-4)
How can you PRAY as a part of Waters:Global?
- Pray for all people. Pray for the nations. Pray for open doors for the Gospel around the world. Pray for the local church around the world as they seek to reach and serve their own communities for Christ. Consider picking a specific people group to pray for or perhaps a region of the world (like the 10/40 Window). Learn about Christians who are enduring persecution and devote yourself to praying for them. Intercede on behalf of the hungry, sick and hurting.
- Pray specifically for the communities that our church will go to this year. Pray for the missionaries and staff working in those places.
- Pray for our Waters:Global teams that will be going this year. Pray for them as they raise funds, prepare as a team, as they travel, and as they serve and plant seeds in the “harvest field”.
“You will be made rich in everything so that your generosity will spill over in every direction. Through us your generosity is at work inspiring praise and thanksgiving to God. For this mission will do more than bring food and water to fellow believers in need—it will overflow in a cascade of praises and thanksgivings for our God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11-12)
What will GIVE look like for you?
First of all, remember that giving is not just financial… it can be your time, talent and treasure. How might you give to what God is doing around the world and through the Waters:Global? There are the obvious opportunities to give to the Waters:Global ministry and to financially support the individuals going on our teams, but let's not stop there.... What else might God lay on your heart? Ask Him... search His Scriptures… and follow the Holy Spirit’s lead. We truly are blessed to be a blessing to others.
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:14-15)
“Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”(Isaiah 1:17)
What does GO look like?
We know that as we go, the love of God will be shared, life-changing truth will be spoken, and that these seeds may be harvested in salvation and healing for those who receive them (whether or not we get to witness that fruit first hand during the trip). All glory to God! The reality of short-term mission trips, however, is that very often the people who are most dramatically impacted are those who go. It is our hope that those who go will come back even more equipped, challenged, and passionate to pursue Jesus-style ministry in their own communities and everyday lives. Your first-hand look at what God is doing around the world may lead you give radically above and beyond to missionaries and ministries on the front lines. Or perhaps you will come back with an even greater hunger to go global with your own life… seeking more opportunities to be sent into the harvest field abroad… whether on future short-term trips or even as a long-term missionary. The beauty is that your GO in 2016 may keep growing and going for the rest of your life. So, where will your GO take you in 2016?
